The UK Parliament has launched an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modernising Employment (MODE).
MODE’s objectives are to:
- use developments in technology to advance recruitment standards;
- further protect workers and jobseekers;
- tackle failings in relation to labour abuse and improve regulation in this area;
- reduce barriers to work and assist jobseekers with finding work;
- make UK hiring the fastest globally; and
- improve choices and chances of getting employment.
Over the next 12 months, MODE will meet to create action plans and develop briefings to achieve its objectives, focusing on opportunity, inclusivity, technology and regulation of UK employment. The outcome of discussions and plans will then be shared with the UK government to take forward.
The group is made up of members of different political parties, from both Houses of Parliament and people in the employment industry, who will exchange ideas and collaborate on the modernisation of employment. The cross-party make-up allows for diverse ideas and influence in discussions.
Keith Rosser, MODE officer and chair of the Better Hiring Institute, said: “By modernising employment we will help create more good job opportunities in the regions and better-paid jobs in the UK, while making UK hiring fully inclusive to support, for example, over 50s returning to work because there are more flexible, work-from-home opportunities they want.“
MODE’s objectives are ambitious but certainly positive, and we will be sure to keep an eye on what MODE can achieve over the next 12 months.
